What to Expect during a Speech & Language Evaluation
We know that the idea of a “speech and language evaluation” can sound a little overwhelming to parents. But here’s the truth: it’s simply first step in helping us understand your child’s strengths and areas where they may need a little extra support.
Step 1: The Conversation with You
No one knows your child better than you do! That’s why we always talk with parents and caregivers. We’ll ask questions about your child’s medical history, development, how they communicate at home, how they interact with friends or siblings, and any concerns you’ve noticed. Your input is one of the most important parts of the process.
Step 2: Getting to Know Your Child
Once we sit down with your child, the real fun begins! Evaluations often look like play at younger ages and every momen is giving us valuable information about how they’re communicating. We might use toys, books, games, or pictures to see how your child:
Understands directions and questions (receptive language)
Uses words, phrases, and sentences (expressive language)
Produces speech sounds (articulation)
Interacts with others (social communication)
Step 3: Standardized Testing (When Needed)
Sometimes we use formal assessment tools to get specific scores and compare your child’s skills to developmental milestones. These tests give us a clearer picture of where your child is doing well and where they might need some extra help. We always make sure to keep things relaxed and fun so kids feel comfortable.
Step 4: Observations Beyond Words
Speech and language isn’t just about talking! We might also look at your child’s oral-motor skills (how their mouth, tongue, and lips move), feeding habits, attention, play skills, and social interaction. All of these areas connect to communication.
Step 5: The Results & Recommendations
Once we’ve gathered all of our notes, test results, and observations, we’ll sit down with you to explain everything in plain language. No confusing jargon—just a clear picture of what we found, what it means, and whether speech therapy would be helpful. If therapy is recommended, we’ll outline goals and give you strategies you can start using at home right away.
Why It Matters
An evaluation isn’t about labeling your child—it’s about understanding them. Every child develops at their own pace, and sometimes they just need a little extra support to unlock their full potential. Our goal is to celebrate your child’s strengths while creating a personalized plan to help with their challenges.
✨ At Fun Time Therapy, we make evaluations positive, playful, and family-centered. By the end, you’ll leave not just with answers, but also with a clear path forward—and the reassurance that we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
