So… What Exactly Is a Speech Therapist?

One of the questions Michelle and I hear all the time (both at work and even in our personal lives) is: “So, what exactly do you do as speech therapists?”

The short answer? We help kids communicate.

The longer answer? Well, that’s where the fun begins!

More Than Just “Speech”

Yes, we do help children with those tricky sounds (like that stubborn “r” or “s”), but our job goes way beyond that. At Fun Time Therapy, we also support:

  • Language skills – helping kids use words to ask questions, share their thoughts, and tell stories.

  • Social communication – teaching kids how to join conversations, take turns, and build friendships.

  • Feeding and oral motor skills – supporting children who need a little extra help with chewing, swallowing, or exploring new foods.

  • Fluency – guiding kids who stutter so they can feel confident in their communication.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

What a Session Really Looks Like

If you picture us sitting at a desk with worksheets all day… that’s not quite our style. At Fun Time Therapy, PLAY is our secret ingredient.

You’ll find us on the floor building towers, running pretend “restaurants,” playing with dolls, blowing bubbles, or even being dinosaurs. Why? Because children learn best when they’re engaged and having fun! Every game, toy, and activity we use has a purpose—it’s all about building communication skills in ways that feel natural and joyful.

We’re All About Teamwork

One of our favorite parts of this job is partnering with families and other professionals. We love sharing simple strategies and tips you can use at home or out in the community —without adding more stress to your busy day. From encouraging your child to use words when asking for a snack to practicing sounds during bedtime stories, progress happens best when we all work together.

Why It’s So Important

Communication touches everything—academics, friendships, independence, and confidence. Supporting your child’s speech and language isn’t just about talking more clearly. It’s about helping them connect, express themselves, and feel proud of their ability to communicate.

✨ At Fun Time Therapy, our sessions are filled with laughter, learning, and lots of heart. For us, being speech therapists isn’t just a job—it’s a passion. We treat every child like family, celebrate every milestone (big or small), and make the journey as fun as possible.
